Payday Loan Scams to Avoid in 2026

Loan scams often exploit urgency. Recognize common warning signs before sending money or personal information.

Upfront payment to release a loan

A demand for gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfer or an “insurance fee” before funds are released is a major warning sign.

No licence information

For payday loans, check the provincial licence and legal company identity rather than relying on a brand name or social-media ad.

Pressure to act immediately

Scammers try to prevent verification. Pause and independently call the business using contact information from a trusted source.

Requests for passwords

Do not send online-banking passwords by email, text or chat. Legitimate verification should use an established secure process.

Fake collection threats

If someone claims you owe an old payday loan, ask for written details and verify the lender or collection agency before paying.
