The starting point is the jurisdiction governing the agreement. A Canadian educational guide is not a statement that the same loan product is available throughout Canada.
Federal framework and local protections
The Criminal Code payday-loan framework contains conditions for the exemption, including an advance of $1,500 or less, a term of 62 days or less, lender authorization and provincial designation. The federal regulations set the borrowing-cost limit within that framework. Local rules still matter for disclosures, repayment and remedies.
Read the applicable provincial guide
For Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, begin with the official consumer-information resources and the relevant local authority. Dedicated guides for those jurisdictions are not included in this release. Do not apply a neighbouring province's deadline or lending framework by analogy.
What to verify in a rule
Record the jurisdiction, source section, effective date and type of agreement affected. A proposal or announcement is not necessarily in force. For an actual agreement, retain the documents and check the applicable regulator's guidance alongside the legislation.
