Credit Score Myths vs. Reality

A credit score is useful information, but it is not a complete measure of financial health and it is not the only factor in every lending decision.

Myth: checking your own score always hurts it

Viewing your own credit information is generally different from a lender making a hard credit inquiry. The effect depends on the type of check.

Myth: one number controls every decision

Lenders may use different bureaus, scoring models and additional eligibility information. A score is one input, not a universal yes/no switch.

Myth: carrying a balance builds credit faster

Interest charges are not required to build a credit history. Paying obligations on time and managing balances responsibly are more important than paying interest unnecessarily.

What matters most

Review your reports for errors, pay on time where possible, keep revolving balances manageable and limit unnecessary applications for new credit.
